The Pros And Cons Of Pursuing Ibogaine Treatment For Your Drug Addiction

Drug addiction can be incredibly difficult to move on from. While conventional rehab programs do work for a lot of people, they do not work for everyone. If you have tried these programs with little success, then you might consider looking into an alternative, such as Ibogaine therapy. Of course, there are both pros and cons to this approach, too.

Pro: Ibogaine is a psychoactive compound, which is a completely different approach from conventional rehab.

If conventional rehab has not worked and you want to try something completely different, Ibogaine fits the bill. It could not differ more from conventional therapy. It is a psychoactive substance that has a direct impact on your thought processes and the way your mind processes information. While you are under its influence, it will give you a completely different outlook on life, which will hopefully be preserved once the treatment session is over.

Con: Ibogaine is not well-researched.

There are many, many anecdotes from patients who used Ibogaine to treat their addiction successfully. However, since the substance is of questionable legality in many countries, and since there is a lot of stigma around psychoactive drugs in general, it has not been well-studied in a scientific manner. There is a chance for side effects that are not well known.

Pro: Ibogaine treatment is a one-and-done procedure.

In order to undergo ibogaine therapy, you typically go to a retreat center and spend a few days there, at most. During this time, you take the ibogaine and work through the issues underlying your addiction with a guide or therapist. Some of the time is also spent resting and preparing for the treatment. But once your therapy session is over, it's over. You don't need to come back for weekly appointments, take any medication long-term, or do any other followup like you would with other treatment plans.

Con: Ibogaine requires travel.

Most Ibogaine treatment centers are in Mexico and New Zealand since the substance is legal for therapeutic use in these countries. Traveling to these destinations is not always easy or affordable for some patients. You may have to wait a few months and save up your money if you're on a tight budget.

Consider the pros and cons above before you decide to attend an Ibogaine treatment center for addiction therapy. This is a newer, up-and-coming option for people who struggle with addiction, and it's not necessarily for everyone.
